Most people drink champagne on New Year’s but I always remember my family mixing up a batch of wine spritzers (pronounced spritzahs). It was the fancy cocktail of choice for all my aunts and uncles. For those not familiar with them, spritzahs are white wine and seltzer over ice. Maybe in Manhattan they were drinking champagne but in the two-story flats on Avenue U in Brooklyn, it was wine spritzahs all the way.

As for us kids, we had our own holiday drink, a Shirley Temple. We made them with 7-UP, grenadine and a maraschino cherry garnish. The cherry was, of course, the best part.

It has been several years since I have had one but I still remember the cloyingly sweet taste. We used to sneak extra cherries to make it even sweeter, if that was at all possible. As a child I was thrilled about all the sugar in a Shirley Temple, as a mom, not so much…

Here is an updated version I whipped up for my kids to drink while ringing in the New Year. Instead of grenadine we are using fresh pomegranates. Originally grenadine was made from pomegranates and syrup but I am pretty sure the stuff they sell in stores these days is no more than corn syrup and food coloring with infused pomegranate flavor.

Pomegranates are considered a super fruit, due to their many health benefits. Besides being an antioxidant, they are packed with vitamins and minerals. They boost immunity, protect your heart, repair your digestive system, and are low in fat and high in fiber. Although I don’t think my kids will care about any of that…

Pomegranate Lime Spritzah


-makes approximately 2 servings

1 pomegranate, seeded, some seeds reserved for garnish

2 Tbsp fresh lime juice, divided, plus slices for garnish

2 tsp sugar, divided

2 cups of ice, divided

1 cup of seltzer (approx), divided



Remove seeds from the pomegranate. Place the seeds in a juicer or food processor.



Strain the liquid through a sieve into a bowl or large measuring cup. Use the back of a wooden spoon to mush the seeds to extract as much juice as possible. Discard seeds and set juice aside.

Take two glasses and put 1 Tbsp of limejuice and 1 tsp of sugar in each. Mix until sugar is dissolved. Next fill each glass with ice. Pour in 1/2 cup of pomegranate juice and top with the seltzer. Shake or stir. Toss in some pomegranate seeds for garnish and place a lime slice on edge of glass. Cheers!


This mocktail can easily be made into a cocktail simply by adding a shot of your spirit of choice.

And the VERDICT is:

Matthew (age 6): “Disgusting”

Liam (age 4): “Tastes like orange juice, I love it”

Dylan (age 4): “It tastes like nothing I never had – more please!”

  1. I don’t remember ever drinking Shirley Temples but for sure, that would have been your and the cousins disgusting drink 🙂
    I’m sure that your mocktail is better than your drink of years ago but maybe Matthew would have preferred it?

  2. It is as if you stole a page from my childhood memories. Yes, we, too, had Shirley Temples, the sweeter the better. How we loved it when we were out for dinner and Dad ordered us our “cocktails”. Matthew’s critique aside, it was a good idea making them a bit healthier for your Boys. I’m still waiting for that medical journal report saying that “those” cherries from back in the day cause all kinds of illnesses in laboratory rats — though what rats are doing drinking Shirley Temples is beyond me. 🙂
